Colony Capital, NorthStar Realty in Talks to Acquire NorthStar Asset Management

NorthStar Asset Management Group Inc. (NYSE: NSAM) is currently in discussions to be acquired by Colony Capital Inc. (NYSE: CLNY), the private equity firm and publicly traded-REIT founded by Tom Barrack. Colony is working with publicly traded REIT NorthStar Realty Finance Corp. (NYSE: NRF) to potentially create a “tri-party all stock business combination.”

NSAM, which spun off from NorthStar Realty in July 2014, is the sponsor of NorthStar’s non-traded REITs and a significant minority owner of American Healthcare Investors – the cosponsor of the Griffin-American Healthcare REIT franchise.

“The three companies believe that the combination would create a world-class diversified real estate and investment management equity REIT with significant scale, deep management talent, and the opportunity to generate substantial revenue and expense synergies,” according to a joint statement put out by the companies on Friday.

There is no assurance a transaction will occur, and the companies do not intend to provide updates in the meantime.

NorthStar Asset Management Group Inc. is an asset management firm focused on managing real estate and other investment platforms in the United States and internationally.
