KKR, a global investment firm, and Western Natural Resources LLC, have partnered to purchase producing and undeveloped oil and gas assets in the Williston Basin. Western Natural Resources is a private company focused on acquiring assets in the upstream oil and gas sector.

The Williston Basin spans 300,000 square miles in eastern Montana, western North Dakota, South Dakota, and southern Saskatchewan and is a major source of coal, oil, and natural gas.

“The Williston continues to be a core area of focus for us as we see a significant opportunity to acquire high quality producing assets with attractive long-term value creation opportunities to be delivered through superior technical and operational execution,” said Ben Conner, director of KKR’s Energy Real Assets team.

KKR said that its investment in the partnership will be made through funds affiliated with its Energy Real Assets strategy, which has reportedly invested approximately $4 billion in capital across 12 transactions since 2015 and manages a portfolio of oil and gas assets across the United States.

KKR manages multiple alternative asset classes, including private equity, energy, infrastructure, real estate and credit, with strategic partners that manage hedge funds.
