Jaime Lizárraga Sworn in as SEC Commissioner

The Securities and Exchange Commission reported that Jaime Lizárraga has been sworn into office as a commissioner by Chair Gary Gensler.

The Securities and Exchange Commission reported that Jaime Lizárraga has been sworn into office as a commissioner by Chair Gary Gensler. His term expires on June 5, 2027.

Lizárraga, who replaces Allison Herren Lee, was nominated by President Biden earlier this year and confirmed by the Senate on June 16th. The agency now has a 3-2 Democrat majority with the addition of Lizárraga.

The news follows the recent swearing in of Mark Uyeda, whose term expires June 5, 2023 and fills the open Republican seat vacated by former Commissioner Elad Roisman.

Lizárraga most recently served as senior advisor to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, where he oversaw issues related to financial markets, small business, international finance, and immigration. He also served as Pelosi’s liaison to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

He has more than 30 years of experience in public service and has served as a senior professional staff member and director of legislative affairs for the Democratic staff of the House Financial Services Committee, deputy to the assistant secretary of legislative affairs at the Treasury Department, and deputy director of the SEC’s office of legislative and intergovernmental affairs.

“I’m honored to welcome Jaime to the SEC as a commissioner,” said Gensler. “Jaime is an incredible public servant with decades of experience in economic and financial policymaking. He has a deep understanding of the intersection of policy and the public interest.”

Lizárraga holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California San Diego and a master’s degree in public affairs from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas.

The SEC’s five commissioners are appointed by the President with the consent of the Senate. Their terms last five years and no more than three commissioners may belong to the same political party. Commissioners may serve up to 18 months beyond the expiration of their terms.
