IPA Hires Former LPL Executive as VP of Government Affairs and Associate General Counsel

The Institute for Portfolio Alternatives, a trade group representing the non-traded direct investment industry, has hired vice president of government affairs and associate general counsel.

The Institute for Portfolio Alternatives, a trade group representing the non-traded direct investment industry, has hired Gina Gombar as vice president of government affairs and associate general counsel.

In this newly created role, Gombar will further expand the IPA’s advocacy efforts and engagement with key decision makers. She will work with Anya Coverman, senior vice president of government affairs and general counsel, on the legal, regulatory and legislative priorities of the IPA and its membership, as well as helping to drive engagement with all legislative and regulatory bodies.

“Gina’s strong legal and regulatory background coupled with her deep industry expertise position her well to further advance the mission of the IPA and our ongoing advocacy efforts,” said Tony Chereso, president and chief executive officer. “Her understanding of our industry, the regulatory landscape and our members’ priorities will make her a valuable member of our team from day one.”

Gombar joins the IPA from LPL Financial where she served as vice president and associate general counsel in the compliance, legal and risk department. During her seven year tenure, she served in various capacities, advising the firm on state regulatory and legal compliance, risk management and government relations, and representing the firm in SEC, FINRA and state securities regulatory examinations and investigations.

She began her legal career as a regulator, spending 14 years as an attorney with the Massachusetts Securities Division within the office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth. She began her career representing the enforcement section in securities regulatory investigations and administrative adjudicatory proceedings, ultimately serving as deputy enforcement chief.

Gombar graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and New England Law Boston and teaches appellate advocacy as an adjunct faculty member at New England Law.

The Institute for Portfolio Alternatives is an advocacy and education group for the non-traded alternative investment industry. The organization seeks to raise awareness of investment products with low correlation to the equity markets, which include non-traded real estate investment trusts, business development companies, interval funds and direct participation programs.
