ADISA’s Spring Symposium Kicks Off in Twelve Days
The Alternative & Direct Investment Securities Association’s (ADISA) Spring Symposium begins Sunday, March 22. As the advisor-sold, non-traded direct investment industry looks back on 2014 and into 2015, this event provides professionals of all levels an opportunity to learn about important industry topics and trends.
With over 50 educational sessions, attendees have a variety of subjects to choose from. Investment products discussed during the symposium include REITs, BDCs, MLPs, and private placements like DSTs, TICs, 1031s, equipment leasing, life settlements, and oil & gas among others.
ADISA President and Co-founder and Co-managing partner of Kaplan Voekler Cunningham & Frank PLC Tom Voekler says industry professionals should “attend the ADISA Spring Symposium to be current on the latest trends in alternative investments, including regulatory, legal and market updates and to receive industry leading educational content and networking opportunities.”
A major topic to be discussed is FINRA’s Regulatory Notice 15-02 (RN 15-02) that announces the SEC’s approval of amendments to FINRA rule 2310 (Direct Participation Programs) and NASD rule 2340 (Customer Account Statements). These amendments address how DPPs and non-traded REITs are valued on customer statements. Kevin Shields, CEO of Griffin Capital Corporation, will moderate a panel discussion titled “Discussion of RN 15-02 and the Expected Effect on the Industry” which will include Chip Cunningham of Kaplan Voekler Cunningham & Frank, Maksim Netrebov of Maks Financial Services, and Craig Porter-Rollins of LJ Cooper Wealth Management as panel participants.
Other themes to be covered in the general sessions include 1031 exchanges and master leases, cyber security issues, regulatory updates, and an industry update from Kevin Gannon of Robert A. Stanger & Co, among many more.
Keynote speaker Ross Bernstein, the creator of “The Champion’s Code,” will share “life-lessons of ethics and accountability from the sports world to the business world.” Bernstein, author of two critically-acclaimed series of sports-business books, will provide insights from over a 1,000 interviews of professional athletes and coaches and offer close to 100 unique characteristics and traits that he deems common among champions.
John Harrison, Executive Director and CEO of ADISA says that the Spring Symposium serves as a “spring check-in point” for the expected 600 or so professionals to become current on issues and trends important to the industry.
Harrison added, “This year we’re updating all segments with where we are on the fiduciary changes, on 15-02, on all levels of 1031 exploration, plus what’s happening with oil and gas investments with the price changes. We station our spring event about 6 month after our annual because a lot can happen in those six months. And clearly a lot has—with current events, a new Congress, and a changing investment environment. ADISA’s Spring Symposium takes place at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans and kicks off at 1pm on the 22nd of March and wraps up mid-day on Tuesday the 24th.
